Backpacking  Through South-East Asia

Should I Go Backpacking Alone? I’m Scared to Take the Leap

Dear reader,

I’ve always dreamed of travelling and exploring the world– especially backpacking sounds amazing to me. I have heard so many great things, both online and from people I know, about backpacking in Southeast Asia. Almost everyone seems to say the same things: It’s the best place to start with a big first backpacking journey. A lot of people also say it is a life-changing experience, full of adventure and exploration, new friends, and unforgettable moments.
While I believe them…. I’ve got to be honest. I’m terrified.
I love the idea of just taking the leap and getting my backpack and booking a flight, but I’m very overwhelmed. My friends are all busy with their own lives and are not interested in joining me. So that also means if I go, I will be going alone. Also, while a lot of people say that Southeast Asia is a great destination, it feels so far away and unknown… That makes it even more intimidating. Just thinking about all the things to arrange and prepare–like where to go, how to get around, visas, etc. – makes me very stressed.

Our Advice

First of all, thank you for being honest, and I have to say it is completely normal how you feel. Taking the first steps into the unknown is always scary, especially when it is as big as travelling alone to the other side of the world.

But let me reassure you: you’re not alone in this. I felt the same way before I left. From the start, I was anxious and stressed about the journey, but I’m so glad I didn’t let that stop me. So from my own experience, I want to answer your concerns, give some real advice and hopefully, excite you enough to take the leap because believe me: you won’t regret it.

South-East Asia: The Ultimate Backpacker Spot

If you’re new to backpacking, Southeast Asia is, in my opinion, the best place to start. Why? First of all, there is already a huge backpacker community there, which means it’s very easy to connect with fellow travelers and you’ll never really feel alone.

Another big advantage? It is very affordable! From cheap street food to cheap accommodation and travel costs, you can travel for a long time without going bankrupt.

But in my opinion, what makes this region truly special is the friendly locals. One of my best memories was from my very first day. After a long flight, I had arrived at my hotel and was still nervous and unsure about what to expect. But the moment I got there, the people welcomed me with the warmest smiles. They offered to drive around the city for free and take me to all the different places for free. While this might not sound like something very big, the kindness of these people instantly reassured me.

Planning Your Trip: What to Know Before You Go

Now, some practical tips on what to do before you go, so you don’t have to worry about this. Before anything else, research the visa requirements of the countries you want to visit. No worries about this, though! Most visas are very easy to apply for online; you just have to make sure to do it on time.

Certain vaccinations, like those against Rabies, are recommended when travelling to this region. Another thing you should be thinking about in time before you go is vaccinations. For this, there is also no need to worry; just make sure to book an appointment with a travel clinic early.

Best Experiences & Must-Visit Places

South-East Asia is packed with incredible destinations, but if I had to pick my favorites, Thailand would be at the top of the list. The food is delicious, the people are always smiling, and the nature is beautiful.

One of the best places I visited was Chiang Mai – a laid-back city in the northern part of Thailand surrounded by jungle and mountains. Here you can do all sorts of amazing things like:
– Going on a multiple-day trekking tour through the jungle
– Visit an elephant sanctuary
– Take a Muay Thai (Thai boxing) class
– Explore famous night markets
If you are more into beaches and parties, head to the south. My favorite spot in the South of Thailand is Koh Tao, a paradise island known for the crystal-clear waters, vibrant nightlife, and the best diving/snorkelling spots.

Final Thoughts & Encouragement

That’s all from me for now, but I truly hope this gives you the little push you need to take the leap and start your own adventure. Sure, it might feel scary at first, but that fear goes away quickly, and what you get in return is priceless. New friendship, unforgettable memories, even a new perspective on life. So take the leap, trust me, you won’t regret it!
